Many Americans think of Africa as third world countries with people living off the land in tribes, but much of it has become far more modern than that. Take Kenya, located on the east coast of Africa. Lots of Kenyans, even those with very little money, have smartphones, giving them access to the rest of the world they never had before. It is now easy to make a penpal in Kenya - just friend them on social media. And they're all over social media. English is recognized by law as the official language of Kenya, so many Kenyans speak English, along with Swahili and their tribal language.
The people are politically conservative. 85% of Kenyans support President Trump. The left wing Black Lives Matter activists here would not feel comfortable over there bringing their radical views. And life wouldn't be easy for them, since how well you do depends on what tribe you're from. Most Black Lives Matter individuals probably have no idea what tribe they are descended from.
Whites get along fine with blacks. There aren't very many whites in Kenya, some have bought property there and others come in for conferences. Instead there is tribalism prevalent even in the big cities. For example, some tribes refuse to let you marry someone from another tribe.
85% of Kenyans are Christian. Islam only comprises 11% of the population. Freedom of religion is protected by the Constitution.
Located on the equator, the temperature stays in the 70s year round. The only seasons are rainy and dry. The large city of Mombasa is partially located on an island, with ferries going back and forth from the mainland. Due to the large number of people going in and out of the city every day, they cram onto the ferries packed in like sardines.
Many Kenyans get college degrees there, but they aren't cheap unless you have high grades and can get into a government funded school. The average Kenyan only nets $359/mth. It is typical to work all day in construction or as a maid and earn only $3 for the entire day. It is difficult to find full-time work and even harder to find decent paying full-time work. 70% Kenyans live below the poverty level. Nairobi, the capital, has one of the world's largest slums, with 170,000 to 1 million people living there. There is no welfare, so Kenyans look out for each other. 38% are illiterate. The average life expectancy is only 55.
Kenya suffers many of the same problems we have here in the U.S. Teenage boys get involved with gangs and drugs. Teenage girls get pregnant.
The government is corrupt. In order to get a government job, you have to be in the right tribe that correlates with that part of the government. However, the system of government is very similar to the U.S., with a president, judiciary and legislative branch. The 2010 constitution guarantees women a certain number of seats in both the Senate and the National Assembly. Slots are also reserved for youth, the disabled and other minorities.
The police are corrupt. They accost citizens for no reason and demand bribes in order to let them go. You think we have police brutality issues here, this is nothing compared to the dirty cops in Kenya.
Unfortunately there is significant child prostitution. UNICEF estimated several years ago that up to 30% of the girls in certain coastal regions were subject to prostitution.
Intellectual Conservative has decided to help raise funds for an area in Kenya in need of an emergency vehicle. The Tudor community in Mombasa does not have an emergency vehicle, so people who need to go to the hospital have no way of getting there, very few people own a car. Please contribute a little to help this community. And consider befriending a Kenyan on social media. We live in a tremendous era where communicating with someone in any country around the world is possible.
