The White House statement says the wall separated Germans from family and friends" and that Germans were trying to escape to freedom." But the president gives no detail on what conditions the brave Germans sought to escape.
The GDR had nothing resembling the private sector in Western democracies. The state ran everything and its command economy guaranteed that the GDR would be an economic basket case less consequential to the world economy than Hong Kong. The GDRs crowning industrial achievement was the Trabant doubtless the worst automobile ever made.
Aware of all this President Obama remains shrink-wrapped in statist superstition primarily the belief that government always knows best. In fact he is on record as having said that the government deserves credit for building businesses not the actual people who started businesses on their own initiative.
Obamas signature program Obamacare passed by only the presidents party represents a takeover of one-sixth of the American economy. The president sold it with lies if you like your plan you can keep it" and Obamacare stripped Americans of their freedom to choose their own healthcare.
