All Things Come to Light
Above all it is not my business what goes on in the privacy of consenting adults bedrooms. In fact the right to privacy is a right that all individuals living in America are so graciously bestowed regardless of race color creed religion gender and/or sexual orientation. Despite this in my view there are circumstances where an individuals right to privacy must be challenged to protect an individual from eminent danger most notably the protection of innocent children. Indeed with the revelations of the Hollywood sexual harassment culture and the #MeToo social movement which the latter became Time magazines person of the year for 2017 appropriately dubbed:
The Silence Breakers. There lies another silent movement that is growing in nature and coming to light pedophilia normalization.
The Blueprint
Presently there is an argument to be made that the same thought process that has led to the increasing legitimization of same-sex marriage is now fueling a growing determination in academic arenas to mainstream pedophilia. Previously considered unthinkable mental health professionals are starting to forge the same path as the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer (LGBTQ) activists established over 50 years ago insisting pedophilia is a sexual orientation" existing from birth and not a hedonistic lifestyle choice. Therefore the argument goes if individuals are born with a sexual attraction to minors their sexual orientation" should be accepted as normative and they shouldnt be made out to be a pariah within society.
White Privilege Leading to the Medicalization of Deviance?
Gottfredson and Hirschi (1990) stated self-control essentially is a product of socialization and the current circumstances of life (p. 179). Moreover people who come from stable families are more likely to be socialized to take into account the long-term consequences of their actions as oppose to individuals who do not come from stable families (Gottfredson and Hirschi 1990). In addition individuals with limited scholastic aptitude are less likely to have favorable long-term prospects and their behavior is therefore less likely to be regulated by them (Gottfredson and Hirschi 1990). When we look at the overall characteristics of individuals who are suspected pedophiles we see an interesting trend the majority of these individuals are white males. According to a United States Department of Justice Report (2017) 82 of those arrested for commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC) were white males. In addition 70 of these men were either single or divorced and the majority of them held a high school diploma or less. Therefore as it pertains to Gottfredson and Hirschi (1990) their synopsis rings true regarding the white male in this instance that is forging a path of acceptance for their so called innate manifestation. Furthermore understanding the circumstances regarding who is likely to be deemed a pedophile is paramount in regards to how they are handled in the criminal justice system and perhaps more importantly the medical establishment.
One of the most memorable and controversial studies published regarding pedophilia or
child-adult sexual relationships was by Rind Tromovitch and Bauserman (1998) titled A Meta-Analytic Examination of Assumed Properties of Child Sexual Abuse Using College Samples" which argued in part that child sexual abuse (CSA) could not only be harmless but beneficial. After the publication of this article the American Psychological Association (APA) garnered unfavorable attention since Rind et al. was published in its official peer-reviewed journal APA Bulletin.
Adding insult to injury the North American Man/Boy Love Association aka (NAMBLA) a pedophile advocacy group cites Rind et al. to argue the organizations position(s) regarding man/boy mutually consensual relationships.
Furthermore in 2013 The American Psychological Association (APA) caused a ruckus when the fifth edition of its lauded Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) called pedophilia a sexual orientation."
After garnering backlash the APA reversed its contentious designation of pedophilia as a sexual orientation". The APA said the text of its new DSM
(should) read sexual interest" instead. The APA goes on to say:
The American Psychological Association maintains that pedophilia is a mental disorder; that sex between adults and children is always wrong; and that acting on pedophilic impulses is and should be a criminal act. The American Psychological Association has worked for many years to prevent child sexual abuse and will continue to do so." (APA 2013).
Nevertheless more studies continued to be churned out such as Ponseti Granert Eimeren Jansen Wolff Beier Deuschi Bosinki and Seiber (2014) which argued that pedophiles brains were (abnormally tuned) to find young children stimulating (pg. 2). In addition the study discovered that pedophiles have the same neurological reaction to images of those they find attractive as those of individuals with (ordinary sexual preferences) but all the relevant cerebral areas become engaged when they view children as opposed to fellow adults.
In addition Laura Kane wrote an article for the Toronto Star titled: Is pedophilia a sexual orientation? She noted in her article that pedophilia has been widely viewed as a psychological disorder triggered by early childhood trauma." (Kane 2013).
In fact many experts see it as a biologically rooted condition that does not change like a sexual orientation thanks largely to a decade of research by Dr. James Cantor at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health." (Kane 2013).
Normalizing debauchery and perversion for the sake of progress?
Traditional values in American society and across the globe have slowly overtime become liberal in nature. Specifically pertaining to sexuality the notion of modesty perhaps is a classical one. In fact according to Judith Resiman (2010) normalizing what classical psychology had viewed as a sexual pathology was a vital strategy driving the research of Alfred Kinsey and the Kinsey Institute into sexual variations".
Our laws are no longer based on Christian morality but on Kinseys immoral morality: an adulterous fornicating aborting pornography-addicted masturbating impotent sadistic masochistic bisexual homosexual exhibitionist voyeuristic and child-sexual-abusive world" (Resiman 2010).
David Kupelian (2005/2015) warned that pedophilia was going to become the next sexual behavior that certain groups would try to normalize.
Believe it or not even child sexual abuse rape and incest (which its apologists euphemistically now call adult-child-sex and intergenerational sex) are slowly but surely gaining respectability" (Kupelian 2005/2015).
Kupelian (2005/2015) noted that many people think having sex with children is a good thing" pointing to 100000 websites at the time offering illegal child pornography. In fact others such as self-proclaimed pedophile Tom OCarroll believes there are children even those of a very young age who like and seek sex with adults. OCarroll believes that adults who want to satisfy this perceived need should be allowed to do so legally (Purtill 2015).

In 2013 Matt Barber a cultural analyst and attorney wrote an article describing his experience attending a conference hosted by pedophile advocacy group B4U-ACT. Barber describes an atmosphere of sympathy toward pedophiles and their desire to become legitimized as it pertains to their sexuality and attraction to minors (Barber 2013). Furthermore a consensus belief by several speakers at the event and pedophiles who attended was that pedophilia should be removed from the DSM as a mental disorder comparable to homosexuality in 1973.
Keeping Hope Alive
There is no arguing that it is humanities duty to protect the children in this world. We must secure them from being raised into a world that accepts endangering their existence. We should be aware of the subtle pedophilia that is attempting to fit into societal norms at all cost. Therefore one would be remiss to discuss justice in all forms and not mention the injustices that are shadowing the very future of human civilization. Our greatest hope should not be about treatment but rather prevention. It is also my hope that by providing a voice for the most vulnerable human beings in our society I might play some part in helping society respond with appropriate aversion to this loathsome attempt to normalize pedophilia.
