And then he said: Its important for us not to feel too sanctimonious in retrospect about the tough job that those folks had.
In short our folks tortured their folks.
One would not go so far as to call this moral equivalence. But as a statement of the presidential mind its awfully confusing.
Mr. Obama made these remarks last week in advance of the release of Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinsteins contested congressional report on Bush-era enhanced-interrogation techniques of al Qaeda captives after the 9/11 attacks that killed nearly 3000 people.
This weeks Wall Street Journal/NBC poll recorded its lowest approval rating to date for Mr. Obama40.
Even recent positive numbers on the economy produced no presidential lift; most respondents think the U.S. has become another dead-in-the-water Japan.
Why the long downhill slide for the Obama presidency?
Short answer: He has talked his way into it.
How could it be otherwise? Can there have been another president from whom has poured forth more words while standing at a public podium?
After what Mr. Obama himself might call a whole lot of listening the American people are pulling back from a president they dont fully understand. Theyve learned they cant ever be sure of what exactly hes asking them to sign on to. And so they are signing off from the Obama presidency.
In a speech last year Mr. Obama announced the war on terror is over and that he would adjust our anti-terror policies to reflect that reality. Then he said in the same speech that the U.S. is at war with al Qaeda and the Taliban.
PRESS REPORTS ON THE SPEECH SAID EVEN THE PRESIDENTS OWN PEOPLE WERENT SURE WHAT THE NEW POLICY WAS.
ObamaCare whatever it is now isnt what Mr. Obamas public comments said it would be.
He says what the U.S. did to its captured 9/11 terrorists was torture but our torturers are basically good guys.
Barack Obama has been talking like this for a lifetime.
Just before the freshman Illinois senator announced his candidacy for the presidency in February 2007 New York Times reporter Jodi Kantor wrote what remains an essential piece to understanding the Obama political persona.
The article was about Mr. Obamas years in the 1990s at Harvard Law School where he became president of the Law Review. Mr. Obama cast himself as an eager listener Ms. Kantor wrote sometimes giving warring classmates the impression that he agreed with all of them at once.
She described an incident involving a bitter dispute among students and faculty over the notion of critical-race theory which was taught at Harvard Law. This is the idea that the lawand much elseis perpetually biased against blacks.
When Mr. Obama finished addressing both angry sides according to law professor Charles Ogletree Everyone was nodding Oh he agrees with me.
This facility is what Mr. Obama described to Harry Reid as his GIFT. But is it?
At the end of the Times article was a comment that was worth filing about the aborning Obama candidacy. Ron Klain who preceded Mr. Obama at Harvard Law by several years and later was chief of staff for both Vice Presidents Al Gore and Joe Biden remarked: The interesting caveat is that is a style of leadership more effective running a law review
than running a country ... or the world!
If you were Angela Merkel the Ukrainians or even Wall Street Democrats there was a time when you had to be thinking Oh he agrees with me. Until they and others figured out they were on their own because Mr. Obama wasnt actually agreeing with them on anything recognizable.
The Obama gift is or was empathy. Every politician since Julius Caesar has known how to do empathy. Bill Clinton summited empathys Everest with I feel your pain. But the Obama style of empathy hasnt matched the office he achieved.
It started with all those weird dropped gs. A cranial gong goes off when Barack Obama starts droppin gs.
The American president who is seen discoursing eloquently at the African leaders summit hits the stump and suddenly he sounds like Gabby Hayes. Folks like you are havin a hard time makin it when the wealthiest are grabbin it all in for themselves.
What is worse Mr. Obama has used his empathy gift only in one directionto animate his base against opponents. It worked for him. He won re-election.
But the way Mr. Obama talks and talks has diminished his authority and credibility. The U.S. has a president who is capable of moving factions with words but not a people. This is a president without a presidential vocabulary.
The 44th president in Kansas City last week: Stop bein mad all the time. Stop just hatin all the time. He is a politician talking his way to an approval rating in the presidential red zone that lies below 40.....
MY OWN RESPONSE TO THIS WALL STREET JOURNAL" OP-ED
On June 30th that days Gallup press release metaphorically screamed:
AMERICANS LOSING CONFIDENCE IN ALL BRANCHES OF U.S. GOVT
-- Confidence hits six-year low for presidency; record lows for Supreme Court Congress."
According to Gallup spokesperson Justin McCarthy Americans confidence in all three branches of the U.S. government had fallen reaching record lows for (1) the Supreme Court (30); (2) Congress (7); and A SIX-YEAR LOW FOR PRESIDENT OBAMA (29) -- down seven percentage points from the previous rating of 36.
Goodness! This is used-car-salesmen territory!
But then again how many Americans would NOW trust Barack Obama enough to buy a used car from him -- he would likely be flogging a used Buick ...
WHAT ABOUT THAT WEEKS LATEST QUINNIPIAC UNIVERSITY POLL?
And while were referencing that weeks opinion polls it hard not to mention the results of the previous days Quinnipiac poll which reported that respondents (many of them liberal Democrats) rated Barack Obama as the worst president since World War II (beating out George W. Bush & Jimmy Carter for the top spot in this presidential-losers race).

TEA PARTY AND TEABAGGERS
In the wake of the 2008 presidential election numerous small groups began to organize around the idea of promoting a policy agenda which stressed among others the following guiding principles: (a) shrinking the size of government; (b) returning to the traditional family values of the past; (c) reinvigorating traditional constitutional law as envisaged by the founding fathers (checks & balances between all three branches of government); (d) reviving free-enterprise capitalism as originally espoused by Adam Smith -- particularly reducing taxes; and perhaps most important (e) emphasizing the primacy of the rule of law in interactions between government & citizens protecting the constitutional right of ordinary citizens to be free from government interference in their lives (including restrictions on the use of executive authority by the White House).
Just as important in July 2010 Rep. Michelle Bachmann (R-MO) created the House Tea Party Caucus effectively incorporating the Tea Party movement into the institutional structure of the Republican Party.
And thanks to these kind of developments the Republicans won a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives in the 2010 national elections -- with much of their their success directly attributed (by friends & foes) to the participation of the TEA PARTY movement.
TEABAGGERS?
And what was the response of the liberal democratic elite to the ascendancy of the Tea Party movement in American politics?
In my opinion to revert to the bitter condescending name calling which recently had become typical of their ilk.
For example as early as April 2009 anchors on CNN and MSNBC took to using the pejorative term teabaggers" to make fun of Tea Party members (who didnt reside in the enlightened urban meccas of Washington New York City or Californias left coast").
And in November 2013 President Barack Obama even used the vulgar expression tea-baggers" to refer to Tea Party members in a letter he wrote to a Texas grade school teacher.
Whether the president actually knew the origin of this sexual slang term is unknown.
But regardless according to several online dictionaries a tea bagger" is slang for: a person who tea-bags" a sexual partner.
And if youre easily freaked out please skip the following dictionary description of what tea bagging" is:
A slang term for the sexual act of a man placing his scrotum in the mouth of a willing sexual partner for pleasure or onto the face or head of another person (so called because of its resemblance to the custom of dipping of a tea bag into a cup of hot water as a method of brewing tea).
Talk about smug elitist presidential arrogance and political mud slinging!
Finally to document just how distanced the Obama White House has become from the folks in flyover country" lets just quickly review the recent coincidental loss of hundreds of e-mails documenting the targeting (unconstitutional persecution) of conservative groups by the IRS for many years.
Obviously fearing the ignorant American masses will rise up in election protest if they find out the truth this executive branch of government (ultimately answerable to the president) ridiculously claimed that it had accidentally lost all the relevant e-mail messages & printouts of IRS bully girl Lois I Take The Fifth" Lerner.
As Charles Krauthammer nastily commented on this IRS revelation: These guys are living on a different planet. They Congress asked for this information a year ago and its now discovered that it is all lost ...
Continued Krauthammer: Nixon lost EIGHTEEN MINUTES of audio tapes; Obama has now lost TWO YEARS of emails.
And finally Krauthammer concluded: one thing that people dont remember is that the second article of IMPEACHMENT for RICHARD NIXON was the ABUSE of the IRS to pursue political enemies ... this is a HIGH CRIME; this is NOT A TRIVIALITY."
