President Donald Trump Taps Kari Lake as Ambassador to Jamaica

President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he was nominating Kari Lake to become the ambassador to Jamaica. Lake has been serving as Senior Advisor to the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM), which oversees the Voice of America (VOA). Trump originally appointed Lake to lead VOA, but courts blocked the move, ruling he lacked the authority to do so without Senate confirmation. Lake largely dismantled VOA, but the courts also voided much of her efforts.

Lake expressed her gratitude to Trump on X. “Jamaica is a country I know very well, full of incredible people, and if confirmed by the Senate, I look forward to strengthening the partnership between our nations, advancing America’s interests abroad, and building on the deep friendship shared by the American and Jamaican people,” she said. “Honored to continue serving in this HISTORIC Administration!”

In another post, she touted her accomplishments at VOA and USAGM. “I’m proud of the work we’ve accomplished at @USAGM — restoring accountability, advancing the America First mission, and bringing much-needed reform to the agency — including @VOANews and @radio_marti,” Lake said

The ambassador position to Jamaica is considered a plum appointment, in part due to the desirability of living in the popular tourist spot.
