Over 288000 has signed a petition at whitehouse.org labeling an open letter addressed to the Leaders of the Islamic Republic of Iran penned by Sen. Tom Cotton and signed by 46 Republican Senators as treasonous against the United States. The letter begins by stating It has come to our attention while observing your nuclear negotiations with our government that you may not fully understand our constitutional system. Thus we are writing to bring to your attention two features of our Constitutionthe power to make binding international agreements and the different character of federal officeswhich you should seriously consider as negotiations progress."
The United States Constitution specifically defines treason. The constitution reads treason against the United States shall consist only in levying War against them or in adhering to their Enemies giving them Aid and Comfort." I do not know how 288000 can label an open letter that explains our constitution written by 47 Senators to another state as treasonous. Perhaps it is because 288000 persons do not understand our constitution or the definition of treason. The letter written by Senator Cotton in no way provides aid and/or comfort to Iran.
However one can point to a specific recent action taken by President Obama that does indeed meet the definition of treason. Last year the Palestinian Authority and Hamas joined to form what was labeled a unity government" for Palestine. Although this agreement only lasted for six months the Obama administration at the time noted it was willing to continue to work and provide aid to the new unity government.
According to reporting from Reuters Jen Psaki State Department spokesperson stated at the time of the formation of the PA Unity government based on what we know now we intend to work with this government." When a reporter followed-up with asking if that meant the continuation of the flow of aid Psaki stated it does but we will continue to evaluate the composition and policies of the new government and calibrate our approach accordingly.
How is this a treasonous act on the part of the Obama administration one may ask? Both our Department of State and our Department of Treasury classifies Hamas as a terrorist organization. This means by law taxpayers monies should not be directed to Hamas. Thus if following our own laws funding to the PA Unity government should have been halted immediately upon its formation. The Obama administration failed to halt funding.
Sen. Cotton and his 46 colleagues did not aid Iran by informing the leaders of the Islamic republic of how our constitutional works. President Obama provided direct financial aid to a unity government between the Palestinian Authority and Hamas a recognized classified terrorist organization. The United States of America since 9/11 has been in a war against terror and President Obama chooses to fund a terrorist government. How can anyone view these facts and not conclude Obama engaged in an act of treason actively aiding an enemy of the United States? So I ask the 288000 signatories who is the traitor?
