Joseph Yang, the youngest candidate in the history of Chandler to run for office, has emerged from a narrow defeat running for office to launch the Local Majority PAC four months ago which supports candidates running in local races. The PAC seeks to “support candidates and policies that promote responsible leadership, economic growth, and accountable governance.” The 23-year old, who has raised over $70,000 so far, is currently focusing on the mayor’s race in Chandler and several races in Marana.
The PAC is backing State Rep. Jeff Weninger (R-Chandler) for mayor of Chandler. Weninger previously served on the Chandler City Council. He is challenging incumbent Mayor Matt Orlando. Orlando was endorsed by numerous left-leaning groups, including Keep AZ Blue Student Coalition, Chandler Gilbert Indivisible, numerous unions and teachers from unions. The LD 13 Democrats feature Orlando, who is an independent, on their website but did not include Weninger, and the Blue Voter Guide states that they endorsed him. Orlando is also backed by many prominent Democrats, such as former Tempe Mayor Neil Guiliano and lawyer Tom Ryan.
Yang argued that under Chandler’s current leadership, the city has faced numerous public controversies, noting that two council members filed lawsuits against the city. Yang told Arizona Insiders that when Weninger was on the city council, there weren’t high-profile controversies, because Weninger works well in bipartisan situations.
