Public Broadcasters outside of the United States
In Germany you have the ARD which operates a national television channel called Das Erste (The First: meaning the very first TV channel in Germany) and is jointly operated by nine regional public broadcasting corporations. All of which are members in good standing with ARD. The regional public broadcasters handle all the public radio services in Germany and mostly program mass appeal formats such as Top 40 Adult Pop News/Talk etc. The regional companies also operate a single terrestrial regional TV station within their area of the country. Also a member of the ARD is international broadcaster DW (Deutsche Welle or German Wave). Germany also has ZDF (Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen or Second German Television) which is independent of ARD but fully funded by the German government.Japan has NHK (Nippon Hōsō Kyōkai aka Japan Broadcasting Corporation) which operates two terrestrial TV channels four satellite TV channels two HD TV channels and three radio services.
Ireland has Raidi Teilifs ireann (RTE) and TG4 (which is aimed at people who speak the countrys native language).
In Australia they have the Australian Broadcasting Corporation which is known as ABC but no relation to our American Broadcasting Company. ABC operates various national and local terrestrial radio and TV stations and new media outlets.
In Canada they have the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). New Zealand has Television New Zealand (TVNZ) and Radio New Zealand (RNZ) which are separate organizations. And let us not forget the mother of all public broadcasters on the international level. None other than the British Broadcasting Corporation or BBC for short. Their founding goes back to the 1920s and domestically has operated commercial free for years and survived off the backs of UK taxpayers. Only their international interests are commercially funded and profit focused. In the UK BBC operates various national TV and radio services (Top 40 Adult Pop Classical/Cultural etc.) coupled with regional radio services new media and high culture music ensembles and has produced many acclaimed hit TV series (not just the long running Science Fiction series Doctor Who but also many hit British sitcoms and dramas...oh and the UK loves its period dramas) although now many private production companies have been allowed to produce TV programs on the BBC channels....that is coupled with a quota mandate from the BBC itself.
Most of these government media outlets are more fully funded by their respected governments through a license fee/tax paid by their respected people in various ways. In the UK the fee is paid by people who own a color television set. As stated earlier none of the BBC outlets domestically run commercials. The German government allows for strict limited advertising time on its government owned radio and TV stations and depending on the laws of a specify country some require a fee even if you own just a radio and/or their respected governments allow for more advertising on the media outlets they own. In Australia they get the funds from government grants instead of a fee." The funding for public media does indeed vary but the common funding mechanism is a license fee paid by people who own some kind of media device but again their exceptions...it just depends on the laws of given nation regarding their public broadcasting practices.
American Public Broadcastings Model
Many of these public broadcasters have been around much longer than our own PBS and NPR...again their are exceptions like the current New Zealand arrangement. So how did we get stuck with those two organisations. You can thank none other than Mr. Great Society War On Poverty; Lyndon Baines Johnson for signing the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967 coupled with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) assigning certain TV channels and radio frequencies to be designated to be educational" a decade earlier. The Public Broadcasting Act had the support of many important people including Fred Rogers of Mr. Rogers fame. The big government types in America were just able to hide behind educational television" to get some kind of government media going in the States. Our model of public broadcasting depends on a private/public partnership with about 15 to 14 percent coming from the taxpayers (no licence fee/but grant money via the CPB). The rest is depended on a combination of business underwriters (mostly corporate) private foundations and free will support from the fans (viewers/listeners of American public media). With that kind of support why is it that progressives insist that our government must forever fund a private organization" that redistributes that wealth to public media across the country? Is it just because it involves government in creating and shaping something? Sure certain public media outlets might die without it but if they were smart they would adopt some business scenes and actually make it work. That does not mean they become for-profit stations or run advertisements that make calls for action." They can be supported by the fans and operate as a non-profit/"educational" station offer programming that works for public media but can draw enough of an audience that will support it and achieve success. It could also mean that stand alone public radio stations that are in rural areas consolidate with a greater service in order to stay afloat.NPR News/Talk stations have been reaping the rewards and actually are challenging old heritage AM radio stations in many markets since most of these NPR focused (but not quite all) broadcast on a FM frequency.
See Kids PBS is Biased in favor of Liberals and/or Progressives
With the support of progressives conservatives have been sounding the alarm that public media is biased in favor of progressive leftists and their causes and worldviews. This has been proven to be true and more so magnified with the recent story on the long running animated series Arthur in which it featured a gay wedding of one of its long time established characters.
I expect that kind of story from a Marc Brown who was among the first of the Baby Boomer generation being raised along the east coast to grow up and/or embrace the values of the progressives that were popular among his peer group. More likely I think that Browns parents were...I say center left liberal of their day (Best guess). I expect someone like him to question and eventually challenge Gods Law on marriage when the people in his peer group have been nudged towards his way of thinking. He says regarding the stance he made via his long running childrens show; Thats not the kind of world we want to live in and we want children educated so they can see theres not just one type of family." With that sentence you really understand the heart of the progressive left to redefine everything in their image and like Prometheus (who many progressives admire) they steal that which God had ordained for good and perverted it into their self centered and hedonist ways in order to advance their so called causes of Love (which includes Free Love and the right to kill unwanted preborn babies) and Social Justice.
Now that PBS Kids has taken a ideological stance for same sex marriage we can say that they are pushing a worldview that half of America continues to oppose in spite of the the Supreme Court (SCOTUS) declaring same-sex marriage a civil right in our constitution. They are doing it with our own money and that is what conservatives like myself are protesting. Other childrens shows have promoted LGBTQ issues and worldviews but they dont take in other peoples money" that PBS Kids does.
Doug Lamborn is Right on Principle but is he doing on such?
I agree with my own Congressman Doug Lamborn that public broadcasting should become self sustaining but this has been the issue he has consistently brought up over and over in the bills that he has constantly proposed. I do ask where his heart is on this matter. Is he doing this out of principle or out of something else...like maybe he just hates PBS and NPR or whatever?
Lamborn is not an honest conservative but rather a lukewarm Republican (Liberty Score 76 C) who will kiss the rings of anyone in order to get ahead in his political career. That includes voting to retain then House Speaker John Boehner in 2015. He makes a great case for his passion in a recent piece he wrote in The Daily Signal (a news/commentary website owned by The Heritage Foundation) and has the support of Franklin Graham the Family Research Council and Freedom Works just to name a few people and groups who agree that its time to cut off the government cheese to PBS and NPR.
Conclusion
Public media overall has become even more hostile towards conservatives and people of faith. These public media gatekeepers are passionate to the macro progressive worldviews they hold dear to and they are trying to devour America (as we know it) as a whole. The never ending statist revolution keeps going and going and going until what? Utopia??? We will only self-destruct before we ever get their. However we need to look at our own self-destruction and correct ourselves as well...that includes my own congressman.
Again let me make this crystal clear the time has come for PBS/NPR to get off their brand of government welfare. I just might not like Lamborns reasons for doing it.
