ICE Officer and Illegal Immigrant in Hospital After Shooting on North Phoenix Freeway

A traffic stop on Arizona’s I-17 freeway has resulted in the hospitalization of an officer with Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and an illegal immigrant from Honduras. According to the Department of Homeland Security, the officer shot twice at Jose Garcia-Sorto when he attempted to drive away after a traffic stop, since the officer was directly in his path.

ICE released a statement, "Fearing for his life, the officer defensively discharged his service weapon two times, striking Garcia-Sorto’s vehicle.”

The traffic stop occurred on October 29 at 4:30 a.m. on the northbound I-17 exit to Dove Road. Garcia-Sorto initially stopped, ICE said, but attempted to flee when the officers approached his vehicle. The officer, who apparently was not injured, was taken to the hospital for evaluation, and Garcia-Sorto, who was wounded, is at the hospital in stable condition.

The incident shut down the exit for several hours.
