Former Democratic Legislator Jumps Into Arizona Gubernatorial Race as an Independent

Democratic former legislator Leezah Sun announced on December 23 that she will be running as an independent for governor of Arizona. Sun previously resigned from the Arizona House of Representatives in January 2024 after an ethics investigation found “a pattern of inappropriate behavior.”

“I took on corporate greed in the Legislature — and I refused to stay quiet when powerful interests put profits over people,” Sun said in a video announcement posted on Instagram. “Now I’m running for Governor to lower costs, protect public schools, and restore power to the working class of Arizona.”

Democratic Party leaders filed the ethics complaint against her in 2022, shortly after she began serving in office, claiming that she abused her status as an elected official in an attempt to influence the outcome of a friend’s child custody agreement, intimidated a school superintendent and threatened to kill a Tolleson city lobbyist by throwing her off a hotel balcony.

The House Ethics Committee conducted an investigation and found that Sun had violated the legislature’s prohibition against disorderly conduct. Before the House of Representatives voted on whether to expel her, she resigned.
