Faith in America

I was reading an article the other day about the faith that children have.  How they know, for a fact, that God exists.  How the belief, with no doubts, that God is there is so strong in them.  We’ve all seen, sometime in our lives, a child interact with God.

That made me think of a story about my son.  He was about 3 years old at the time.  We were driving and the road that we were on was in both sun and shadow, due to the overhang of the trees.  I see my son in his car seat in the backseat.  His attention to completely away from me and his dad.  He’s covering and uncovering his eyes with his hands. He’d say “peek a boo” and then laugh.  He did this over and over again, completely caught up in his game.  While it was obvious that he was playing peek a boo, he wasn’t playing with me or his dad, the only other people in the car.

So, I asked him what he was doing.  I can still hear his little voice answer, “I’m playing peek a boo with God.” He said it so matter-of-factly, almost as though I should have known.  Thinking about that day so long ago, made me think about faith in America.  How true Americans need to have the faith in America that children have.

America was built on faith.  America is about faith. Faith in God; faith in its citizens to choose their own pursuit of happiness; faith in a Constitutional Republic, instead of royal decree; faith that men can self govern; faith that our fellow American believes in the greatness of America.  Faith should guide our nation.  It seems like more and more people are losing faith in American.

It’s easy to get disheartened with all the negativity; with all those mocking our faith in America.  Then I think about the Bill of Rights and our First Amendment, specifically, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”  I think about our founding fathers and their faith in America.  Their words continue to echo…

George Washington said, “The propitious smiles of Heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of order and right, which heaven itself has ordained.”

James Madison said, “We have staked the whole future of American civilization not on the power of government, far from it. We have staked the whole of our political institutions upon the capacity of mankind for self-government, upon the capacity of each and all of us to govern ourselves according to the commandments of God. The future and success of America is not in this Constitution, but in the laws of God upon which this Constitution is founded.”

Theodore Roosevelt said, "In the first place we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the man's becoming in very fact an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here.”

Calvin Coolidge said, “The foundations of our society and our government rest so much on the teachings of the Bible that it would be difficult to support them if faith in these teachings would cease to be practically universal in our country.”

Donald Trump said, “Faith is more powerful than government – and NOTHING is more powerful than God.”

I think what America needs is more faith.

Faith to act for the greater good.
Faith to support our founding documents.
Faith that true America Citizens want the best for America.

Don’t be afraid to let your faith show.  In keeping with the current times, Fly Your Faith Flag Proudly.

So, it’s time for the faithful to act like true Americans.  How?

  • Vote: Find and support those candidates that share your faith in America.
  • Get Your Voice Heard: contact (and continue to contact) your elected officials – get their stance on topics and provide them with your stance.
  • Obey Laws, while legally changing those that are unjust.
  • Speak for those who either can’t speak or who have been silenced: our veterans, our elderly, our unborn children.
  • Discuss with Others: keep talking, keep listening, keep researching, keep learning.
  • Find common ground and work on issues collaboratively.
  • And lastly, but definitely not the least important, continue to pray for America.
