I wrote this piece last year when this song hit the fan. But it weathered it out and people still love this song. This standard of the Christmas/Winter Holiday season was written in the different time.
In this age of #metoo and super hyper feminism it is amazing that women or at least its popular stars especially in pop music want to express their sexual feelings and use their sexuality to boost their popularity. The sad thing is that they get away with it BECAUSE they are women. We men cant do the same thing or we are just scum who cant show respect for the fairer sex.
When Piers Morgan (who I am not fan of) got critical with UK girl group Little Mix for their group nude pic (and yes it ripped off what the Dixie Chicks did when they became washed up) Joan Grande tweeted back to Morgan with the cant say anything nice" remarks. Along the way in this spat the more famous daughter Ariana chimed in and said; I use my talent AND my sexuality all the time because I choose to. women can be sexual AND talented. naked and dignified. its OUR choice. & we will keep fighting til people understand. I say this w all due respect but thank u next. After which she encouraged Little Mix to keep doing what they are doing. Lest we forget that Grande had a hit with God is a Woman" that makes a blasphemous statement while making yet another sexual statement not only in the song but in the video as well.
We ladies can do it because we are woman and like Katy Perry said we are going to hear them roar. She stole that from Helen Reddy you know...remember her? Oh never heard of her? Showbiz can be so cruel. Before Madonna Perry and Grande and between Peggy Lee Patti Page and Dinah Shore you had Reddy.
This brings me to the controversy of what is now a Christmas standard or it is one because it ties into the winter weather (i.e. Winter Solstice). That being the standard written by stage musical songwriter Frank Loesser titled Baby Its Cold Outside." This song was written in 1944 as way for Loesser and his wife at the time Lynn Garland to sing at the parties that were put on and send their guests on their way (they did not have to go home but could not stay their). In those days celebrities were expected to preform for the attendees. Baby" was a way for Franks wife to duet with him. Its a call and response song between a mouse" (usually female) and a wolf" (usually male). The mouse is trying to get out of the habitat of the wolf but wolf is persistent in trying to keep the mouse sheltered and maybe something for himself as well. In many versions their is some spoken dialogue between the singers about the quagmire usually ending with the mouse conceding to the wolf.
Flash forward to the 21st Century and the recent Hollywood scandals and the birth of the so called #metoo movement. Sadly a legitament case and cause gets hijacked by the politically correct police. Not just those who want to bork a judge (which they lost on) but even go after certain songs that apparently encourage date rape. Baby Its Cold Outside" sadly is seen through a 21st Century prism and perspective. With a line with whats in this drink" it sounds like the wolf wants to knock out the mouse and eat her. In human terms it sounds likes the man wants to pick her locks.
A Cleveland station; heritage FM WDOK (known on air as Star 102)
decided to pull all versions of the song off its station. In Denver their heritage FM station KOSI (known on air as Cozy 101.1)
followed suit but had second thoughts and
conducted a poll via their website. Only five percent of those who took the poll wanted the song off the air. So it appears it will have a place on KOSI at least for now. Star 102 and a few Canadian stations are standing firm with the Cold Outside" ban.
Now some versions of Baby Its Cold Outside" do tend to change the rules of the wolf and mouse. The Glee Cast version is done with two gay men (or just play them on TV sung by Chris Colfer and Darren Criss) Kelley Jakle and Shelley Regner (both are women by the way) do the song in the movie Pitch Perfect 3 and Nathaniel Rateliff is the mouse while Julie Davis is the Wolf in their recording of the standard.
Their is a time and place for ...Cold Outside." I would not want to hear it during a Lessons and Carols service for crying out loud. Certain stations that do all Christmas music should not play it either if their year around format is some kind of Contemporary Christian Music format. That kind of song does not belong on such a station. However I am calling out the double standard on this song. While I agree that Harvey Weinstein is a scumbag I also dont like how the state of #metoo is being used to destroy men that the progressive loathed but yet protect men or at least try to that they favored. Heck some like The Views Joy Behar called for Al Franken to return to government.
As soon as the holidays end and the Christmas music is mothballed until the end of 2019 we shall hear once again songs from Katy Perry and Madonna using their femme fatale since those artists are popular on most stations that do an all Christmas format around this time of the year. Madonna can say she is not sorry (even at 60 years of age) and its Human Nature" and Katy...well let us pray that the prodigal daughter does return to Jesus Christ...not necessarily her parents brand of Christianity.
Now what is your favorite version of Baby Its Cold Outside?" My favorites would be Idina Menzel/Michael Bubl (The flag above is clip from the respected music video) and Rod Stewart/Dolly Pardon.
Oh and for the Grandma Got Ran Over by a Reindeer" haters. Granddad is Santa and Grandma is doing fine. As for Mommy kissing Santa...its your father stupid...now get back to bed. I only want to hear John Mellencamps version of that song by the way.
And Ariana...I understand what you said very well. I just shall keep calling you out on your double standard in spite the fact that you can truly sing. Either that or maybe I should start calling you Gozer.
