The Arizona Senate passed a bill on March 2 that makes it a Class 1 misdemeanor to assist someone with avoiding an arrest. Sponsored by Senate Majority Leader John Kavanagh (R-Fountain Hills), Senate Bill (SB) 1635 provides that offenders could receive up to 6 months in jail and a $2,500 fine.
Kavanagh said in a statement released by the Arizona Senate Republicans that the bill was introduced in part due to State Sen. Analise Ortiz alerting people last August to the presence of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Phoenix. State Sen. Jake Hoffman (R-Queen Creek) posted about the incident, “Democrat State Senator openly impeding ICE efforts to deport illegal alien criminals in AZ. She’s doxxing ICE agents & openly putting the lives of American law enforcement at risk. I’ll be filing an ethics complaint. She should be expelled from the Arizona legislature.”
“As President Trump works to remove criminal illegal aliens from our communities, radical Democrat lawmakers, including Senator Analise Ortiz, have chosen to interfere and help criminals evade arrest,” Kavanagh said in the statement. “That behavior endangers law enforcement officers, threatens public safety, and shows a complete disregard for the rule of law. Arizona is not a state of anarchy, and we will not tolerate elected officials undermining active law enforcement operations.”
After she was criticized last summer, Ortiz doubled down defending her actions. “The fascists and white supremacists in power in Arizona are targeting me because I shared information about ICE lurking outside an elementary school so our community could avoid the area and stay safe,” she posted on Instagram.
