Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes Releases Addresses, Phone Numbers of Voters with Protected Info

Arizona Secretary of State (AZSOS) Adrian Fontes is under fire for releasing the home addresses and phone numbers of 373 Arizona voters in 2024. Those voters are in the state’s address confidentiality program, which includes victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking as well as law enforcement. The breach went undiscovered and undisclosed for nearly two years before recently coming to light.

State Rep. Alex Kolodin (R-Fountain Hills), who is running against Fontes for secretary of state, accused Fontes of breaking the law. “Dem AZSOS Fontes broke the law again!” he posted on X. “Fontes broke AZ law by publishing the home addresses & phone numbers of HUNDREDS of victims of domestic violence, sexual assault & stalking. Voters who were guaranteed confidentiality & protection — Fontes broke the law & put them at risk.”

Merissa Hamilton, who runs EZAZ which looks into election wrongdoing, posted her disappointment on X. “Fontes has a habit of being loosey-goosey on protecting survivors,” she said. “After I was a whistle-blower as an election worker in 2018, magically, the ballot and election mail for my abuser started showing up at my house again, even though he never changed his voter registration to my home.”

A.R.S. 41-165, which governs the Address Confidentiality Program (ACP), states that disclosing protected voter information is a Class 1 misdemeanor, the most serious level of misdemeanor.
