With 7% of the federal government temporarily shut down since October 1 due to gridlock in Congress, fears are growing that states will be unable to provide food stamps to the needy beginning on November 1. Halting the program, known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), would affect nearly 900,000 Arizonans — roughly 1 in 10 adults and 1 in 4 children in the state. More than half of the families in two rural counties, Apache and Gila, receive SNAP assistance.
Republicans and Democrats are pointing fingers at each other for causing the possible crisis. Democrats in Congress refuse to approve the Republican majority’s continuing resolution (CR), a temporary funding bill to keep government operations running at current levels while negotiations continue on a full budget for fiscal year 2026. Senate Republicans have been unable to bring together 60 votes to get around the Democrats’ filibuster.
