Democratic Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes has sued the Trump administration 41 times since he took office in January 2025. Only a few other Democratic attorneys general have filed more lawsuits than Mayes. They generally form coalitions and file the lawsuits together. At the beginning of April, the Democratic attorneys general announced that they had filed their 100th lawsuit against Trump.
Mayes joined coalitions suing over Trump’s executive order on birthright citizenship, his executive order on election integrity, an ICE facility in Surprise, SNAP funding cuts, tariffs, laying off federal employees, DOGE access to financial information such as Medicaid and federal grants to states, dismantling federal agencies and more.
Most of the lawsuits are still pending. While a few U.S. District Court judges have issued her temporary small victories, such as injunctions, appeals courts often reverse lower courts. The Democrat attorneys general claim they have won 55 of 67 rulings, but many of these rulings are preliminary rulings by left-leaning judges who may be reversed. The U.S. Supreme Court is set to rule on birthright citizenship.
While the Supreme Court struck down tariffs, which Mayes considers a victory, Trump found a way to implement them another way. Similarly, the Trump administration is likely to find ways around other adverse rulings if relief cannot be obtained in the higher courts.
