A Tale of Disingenuous Trolling

width=500 In the culture there are so many underlying tensions and outright anger in the culture of 2020. The obvious is that movies will be used as pawns for political ideologies. This isnt a new idea in movies since the 70s. But the feeling of those political movies of the 70s seemed to tell a grander story at play. Deer Hunter told of the woes and sadness of a friendship broken up by the Vietnam war. It was praised and celebrated winning 5 out of 9 Academy Awards for the violence of war depicted but also about the loss of friendship caused by war in a small Pittsburgh town (which is where this writers family is from). Deer Hunter is a film that truly tests ones nerves about how the Vietnam war was perceived. Deer Hunter was also depreciated for being a right wing film but the brilliance of weaving such a tale about love loss war and madness about coming home is Homeric in scope. It gets flack for the Russian Roulette" scene which is disturbing but plays apart of the story to tell the cruelty of war and what POWs experienced (albeit fictional but still nerve wracking to think about). Michael Cimino was at the height of his powers and some filmmakers would argue Heavens Gate is the breaking point of his talents bankrupting the film company United Artists and catapulting Michael Cimino into a unfortunate spotlight as an troubled" filmmaker. The promise of a good movie being honored by the Oscars today is unrewarding to think about. The Oscars are a joke easily manipulated by the backlash of Woke culture to fit SJWs needs. This writer has never watched a full Oscars show and quit in 2005 after the public shaming of Mel Gibson after a drunken tirade" to a police officer one fateful night causing him to become a social pariah leaving him to finally make a return with the war movie Hacksaw ridge (2018) about the experiences of Desmond Doss a famous pacifist who joined WW II as a non-combatant on the front lines of Iwo Jima. Otherwise movies were finished when Lord of the Rings and Passion of the Christ closed out the world of brilliant filmmaking and story telling to the end of a generation of filmmaking in general. Which leads into the next example of the culture war at large. Birds of Prey a DC comic adaptation of Harley Quinns adventures away from jokers splitting up with him after the events of Suicide Squad and being chased by a marauding pimp played by Ewan McGregor as well as it could be. The desperation of a good movie is hard to stomach and seeing the lover of Joker played by Margot Robbie as good as she could in the end to a movie that nobody showed up to With such a problem at hand this shouldnt be an issue. Harley Quinn can easily find her footing later on in the DC animated version on DC Streaming services should have been a win in a big budget action movie. The problem was all too familiar. Making women less attractive bad ad campaigns and star Ewan McGregor promoting feminism was a bad sign. If there is a way to tell any artist or star right now in Hollywood its simple enough. And this is the best piece of advice to anyone pursuing the Arts. If you are going to lecture people about gay/tran rights feminism environmentalism black studies your audience including myself should receive a hand job in return. Its hard enough to find a movie thats devoid of political ideology if one is watching a period film in the past. Thats easy to excuse. Even today some movies are worth watching that talk about modern events. Chernobyl deals with the horrors of nuclear energy and the horrors of covering up a national Russian tragedy. With all these examples there is the preamble of what makes the new DCEU movie Harley Quin: Birds of Prey shameful to admit that movies are uninteresting unless a film actress is wearing mini-skirts. Harley Quinn should be hyper sexualized in order to make anyone even the films target audience the gay community go see it. The problem is Birds of Prey didnt appeal to anyone. Its hard to make a film or novel or piece of art and expect people to see the same piece of art the same. What is taking place now is harder to explain. There are a series of tweets surrounding the new live action version of Sonic the Hedgehog based off the popular Sega games which were developed in the 90s with a blue hedgehog that destroys machines to free his animal friends and to face off against the evil Egg Head at the end of each level brought hours of game play to this writers life. There are tweets that started on Feb 10th that detailed in this article.  https://boundingintocomics.com/2020/02/12/birds-of-preys-fans-accuse-sonic-the-hedgehog-movie-of-homophobia-in-attempt-to-tank-opening-weekend-box-office/ The problem is there are so many tweets labeling the Sonic movie as homophobic or even saying using homophobic slurs" and if this is to get people to see the failed Harley Quinn movie this is not their ticket. Sonic is a childrens movie and should be enjoyed on the merits of its aspect for a fun night at the movies. Its a blue hedgehog. Its not offensive. If the problem of not seeing a film is due to feminism destroying a film like Harley Quinn the optics are not the same. Its the anger surrounding Sonic that doesnt hold water. To stop people from seeing a film like sonic with negative unwanted press is a form of censorship. Trying to destroy a film like Sonic before its release is just another stupid degrading perspective SJWs are taking online. The response is: go see Sonic the Hedgehog. The debate to destroy a film like Sonic is wrong in the way that Iran tried to destroy Salman Rushdie after his portrayal of Muhammed in the Satanic Verses (1989). An excellent book by the way. Censorship in any form is not what freedom of speech means. It means letting all art have a chance to survive without attacking another piece of art without judging it by the basis of wanting people to see a bad DC comic book movie. Its the consequence of trying to send a positive message to a bad film that doesnt deserve praise and the market will decide what works and what doesnt in a society. The argument to destroy another work of art by promoting another is an argument that doesnt work and will never work on any individual level. Its mass dogma and asking people to give up their individual pleasures for a bad movie about DC super villain comic book movie. Its not attacking the patriarchy by making a bad female comic book movie. The characters should be interesting and have flaws and genuine. Good art is genuinely shocking and will attract an audience. Being forced to like something is what our parents do and people with weak sensibilities. The best thing about art is that people are free to like what they want. If you enjoyed either films or Satanic Verses great as well. Please be yourselves too.
